The discrete I/O module in 05704-A-0145 is also called "digital I/O" and refers to data that is in one of two states: on or off. These signals are also known as 1s and 0s, or on and off. When learning PLC programming, discrete I/o is usually much simpler than analog I/o. An example of discrete I/O is a push button switch, which uses pressure to turn the motor off and on.

Proximity switches are also an example of discrete I/O, as they can detect the presence of an object without physical contact and can be turned off or on without the use of an external force. When the PLC receives a signal from the discrete input channel, it becomes aware of the status of the discrete sensor. There is usually a set of light-emitting diodes (leds) within the discrete input module, which are energized when the device is turned on. When the photosensitive device senses the LED, it turns on, thus activating the LED in the PLC memory.

The PLC then sends this information to the control device through discrete output channels. Similarly, the PLC sends an LED signal to activate the photosensitive device. When sent through the PLC's computer circuitry, these electrical loads allow control devices, such as motor starters or indicators, to operate.
